In celebration of children’s
day and the menstrual hygiene day, the African women lawyers’ Abuja chapter
visited the Junior Secondary School, Kuje on the 28th day of May,
2024. Focused on promoting, preserving
and enhancing the rights, interests and welfare of women and children to see a
society free from abuse and indignity for women and children, the students were
sensitized on their rights and access to justice. The students were further
encouraged to be focused and hardworking if they must make a positive mark.

In line with the Menstrual hygiene day celebration, the students were also made to understand that Menstrual hygiene is relevant to all of us. The theme for this year is #Periodfriendlyworld#. Menstrual Hygiene Day focuses on two aims, to break the taboo around menstrual health and hygiene
by raising awareness and to shift the negative social norms around it. The girls were encouraged to absorb or collect blood that can be changed in privacy as often as necessary for the duration of the menstruation period, using soap and water for washing the body as required, and having access to facilities to dispose 0f used menstrual management materials.
Due to the increase in
bullying incidents in schools across Nigeria, the students were also
enlightened on the need to be peace builders. They were taught that peace
building aims to empower young people to become active and responsible citizens,
who can contribute to building a culture of peace in their communities and
beyond. Students play a crucial role in developing a peaceful society by
promoting tolerance, understanding, and open-mindedness. Hence the students
were encouraged to resolve their differences without resorting to violence.
