United for Equal Representation: Advancing the Special Seats Bill for Women - Esther Oyeyemi Esq.

I am delighted to have joined this powerful rally organized by women on the 16th day of February, 2026. This is more than a gathering. It is a united voice — a collective call for fairness, representation, and justice.

We advocate for the Special Seats Bill reserved for women — a bill that is not about privilege but a necessity.

For far too long, women have been underrepresented in decision-making spaces. And yet, women make up half of our population. We are leaders in our homes, in our communities, in business, in education, and across every sector of society. It is only right that our leadership is equally visible in parliament and in governance.

Special seats are a corrective measure — a bridge toward balanced representation. They acknowledge the historical and structural barriers that have limited women’s political participation: limited access to resources, cultural biases, political violence, and systemic exclusion. This bill seeks to level the playing field.

When women are at the table, priorities shift. Policies become more inclusive. Issues like maternal health, education, gender-based violence, child welfare, equal pay, and community development receive the attention they deserve. Evidence from around the world shows that when women lead, communities thrive, economies grow stronger, and democracies become more responsive.

This bill is not just about women — it is about strengthening democracy itself. A parliament that truly reflects its people builds trust. It builds fairness. It builds better laws. Representation is incomplete when women’s voices are missing.

To the women here out there: your presence matters. Your voice matters. Your vote matters. Change has never come from silence — it comes from courage, unity, and persistence.

Special seats for women is not just an issue. It is a societal issue. Progress happens when we stand together.

Let us continue to stand firm. Let us continue to advocate. Let us continue to demand a system that recognizes the full potential of every citizen. The Special Seats Bill is a step toward that future — a future where leadership is defined not by gender, but by ability, integrity, and vision.

Together, we rise.

Together, we lead.

Together, we will be heard.

Thank you.
