On my way to church for crossover night, a keke
passed by me filled with young men shouting aimlessly. Some were even standing
while the keke was still in motion. One of them yelled, “Una no dey shout make
una dey shout, abi una dey mad?” In that moment, I paused and sincerely
wondered if they truly understood the essence of crossover night.
After the crossover service, while returning home, I encountered another group of young men on motorbikes—looking disoriented and restless. They were shouting, some recklessly brandishing cutlasses, while others blew knockouts (popularly known as banga) into the sky. Watching them, I couldn’t help but ask myself: are these young men aware that they may be blowing away their destinies?
These are youths who should be intentional, thoughtful, planning, building skills, and laying solid foundations for the future. Sadly, many appear to have lost the true meaning of crossover night and the significance of a new year. The transition into a new year is not merely noise and excitement; it is a sacred moment for reflection—an opportunity to assess the past year and make conscious decisions to live better, wiser, and more purpose-driven lives.
If it is not yet clear, let it be said plainly: crossover night is a time to glorify God for His mercy and faithfulness throughout the past year. It is a time to reflect, to realign priorities, and to commit to becoming a better version of oneself in the year ahead. It is not a time for recklessness or destructive behavior.
As
we begin a new year, we are given a fresh opportunity to live a life of
purpose. This starts with building a reflective life, taking time each day to
think about our choices and grow from them. It also means forming meaningful habits and connections with others through kindness, respect, and care. Above all, a
purposeful life is one surrounded by God’s love, allowing His guidance to shape
our actions and give us strength throughout the year.
May we choose purpose over chaos, reflection over noise, and growth over emptiness. The future is too valuable to waste.
